April 6 - Canada CERB Portal

  • The portal for accessing the CERB is at Canada.ca where Canadians can apply, enter direct deposit information, and start receiving $2,000 per month for 4 months within 10 days.

  • New aid coming for contract workers

April 2 - Canada Loan Program Updates

RBC FAQ has more information on CEBA.

  • CEBA will be a revolving line of credit through banks, available for use until Dec. 31, 2020.
  • After Dec. 31, balance will be converted to non-revolving 5-year term loan that matures Dec 31 2025.
  • No interest until Jan 1, 2023 when interest will be charged at 5% per annum, and payable on the last day of each month.
  • If you pay 75% of your balance before Dec 31, 2022, the remaining balance will be forgiven.
  • If you do not repay 74% by Dec 31, 2022, the full loan balance and all accrued and unpaid interest will be payable on Dec 31, 2025. -Applications will be online, still waiting for details.

Paycheck Protection Loan Program Update:

  • Money is scheduled to begin being disbursed Friday, April 3.
  • Apply through any federally-insured bank, credit union, or farm credit system institution (not a traditional SBA lender), and most businesses will be applying online through a bank’s website.
  • You don’t need collateral, but you’ll need to document payroll, rent, mortgage interest and utility expenses.
  • Forgiveness is expected to be calculated after June 30 for the period of Feb 15 to June 30, 2020.

SBA Loan Program Update:

Note: A company that gets a disaster loan cannot use the money for payroll purposes if it’s also getting a Paycheck Protection Loan, as described above.

April 1 - US Federal Relief & for BC Hydro Customers in British Columbia, Canada

US Federal Relief

  • Payment Protection Program: forgivable loans for small business
  • Added tax credits for self-employed: Sick Leave Credit and Family Leave Credit
  • Contractors & self-employed now qualify for UI (and other UI updates)
  • Many details on federal student loan relief
  • CERB application dates

BC Hydro in British Columbia, Canada

The COVID-19 Relief Fund allows eligible residential customers who have experienced job loss to receive three months of free credit on their BC Hydro bill based on their average consumption. The fund also allows eligible small businesses that needed to close due to COVID-19 to have up to three months of electricity charges waived.

March 30th - Wage Subsidy Update

  • Wage Subsidy: For businesses with revenues decreased by 30% or more. Number of employees irrelevant.
  • Gov’t will cover up to 75% of the salary on the first $58,700 of salary (up to $847/week). Backdated to Mar 15.
  • Gov’t wants you to top up the additional 25%, but that is optional. Pay it if you can. The goal here is that you use it if you need it and do not abuse the system.

March 27th - Update to the Canadian Small Business Response Plan

  • Government boosts wage subsidy to 75% for small, medium businesses and will backdate subsidies to March 15, 2020
  • Government to guarantee bank loans of up to $40,000 for small businesses (interest-free for the first year & some will qualify for up to $10,000 of the loans could be non-repayable).
  • GST and HST payments, as well as duties and taxes owed on imports, will be deferred until June

March 10th - Tracking Cancelations

There are some government announcements coming in the next few days about how stimulus packages may be available to help small businesses affected by COVID-19 restrictions.

One of the things you can do now to help for the future is to compile data that might be useful in the future by creating a custom cancellation reason to track the appointments that are cancelling due to COVID-19.
